Congratulations to the Rutgers Women+ in IT group which has received a Rutgers Newark Chancellor’s Impact Seed Grant for 2022. The award of $25,000 will go towards two initiatives to develop STEM in the Newark community.
The first is in support of the FIRST LEGO League Challenge for Middle school students, an annual event that runs for 12 weeks in the Fall, and brings students together to work as a team. Critical thinking, innovation, and basic math are required to complete the tasks (usually in the field of robotics). They are looking to partner with the George Washington Carver Elementary School in the South Ward of Newark.
The second is in the design of a two-year program for the new high school, the School of Data Science & Information Technology, located in the West Ward of Newark. The program would assist students to incorporate data science and understanding the backend programming needed to develop online applications. Students would be exposed to workshops over the period of two years to learn the science behind web application development and have hands-on training to develop a web application system.
The RU Women+ in IT group will be working in collaboration with the RU Newark Center for Precollege Programs (CPP) and the Newark City of Learning Collaborative.
