SUMMARY:NorthEast Regional Computing Program (NERCOMP): Women's History Month - A Leadership Ecosystem Webinar
DESCRIPTION:https://nercomp.org/forms/meeting/Microsite/women_history \nEvent Overview\nThe NERCOMP Leadership Ecosystem has elected to celebrate Women’s History Month by focusing our March webinar on women who are early to mid-career and finding ways to lead. The challenges of women in technology related roles are fairly well known as the number of women in technology professions remains well below the percentage of women in the workforce\, and in recent years has declined. In this webinar\, we have three accomplished panelists who will invite us into their experiences\, including those that have been challenging and those that have been the most impactful. They’ll share their perspectives on opportunities for continued career and leadership growth. \nWorkshop Organizer: Cindy Mitchell of Colby College & the Leadership Ecosystem Working Group\nModerator: Kara Amana | Associate Director\, MBA Technology | Harvard Business School

SUMMARY:NJEdge Women Leaders in Technology Professional Network: Beyond Implicit Bias: Individuals and Institutions
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Patti Ippoliti\, MBA\, Ph.D.\nPresident\, PI Associates\, LLC\, Assistant Professor\, Rutgers Business School \nAgenda\n\n5 p. m. – 6:15 p. m.  Registration\, networking\, cocktails\n6:15 p.m. – 6:45 p.m.   Dinner\n6:45 p.m. – 8 p.m.   Speaker & dessert\n\nDiversity of thought is crucial in coming up with the right solutions to business challenges\, customer success and creative thinking in tech; however\, women are underrepresented in this industry.  According to a 2017 National Center for Women & Information Technology report\, only 26% of tech roles in the U.S. were held by women\, while the percentage of women CIOs (Chief Information Officers) at Fortune 500 companies was just 17%.  Many of the most persistent obstacles to achieving gender parity in tech are related to unconscious bias. Everyone has unconscious biases\, inherent ideas and impressions about certain groups leading to unfounded conclusions about people in those groups.  Come learn how to overcome personal and institutional implicit biases that can keep organizations from realizing their full potential. \nThis symposium will highlight: \n\nThe social science behind implicit bias.\nThe definition of implicit bias and examples of how it affects our personal and professional lives as well as the success of organizations.\nThe circumstances under which you are more likely to be predisposed to implicit bias in your decision making as well as ways to combat such tendencies.\n\nWho should attend?\nAnyone interested in learning more about unconscious bias\nAll genders are welcome! \nRegister\nCocktails and Dinner Included!  Cost: $25

SUMMARY:OCLC Distinguished Seminar Series: "Why so Few? The Underrepresentation of Woman in Technology and Software Development"
DESCRIPTION:While women were central to the history of computer programming\, there are now very low percentages of women in key technical positions and leadership roles across multiple sectors. Computer science is the only STEM discipline (i.e.\, science\, technology\, engineering\, math) to experience a multi-decade downward trend in the percentage of women receiving degrees and entering technical computing jobs in the workplace. \nThe underrepresentation of women in computing exists in Silicon Valley as well as cultural and educational institutions including universities\, libraries\, and not-for-profits. From a social perspective\, the open source disparity is paradoxical given the pro-social ethos of open source software\, one that promotes openness\, collaboration\, sharing\, and transparency. \nGrounded in theories of gender and power\, discourse and practice\, Payette will reflect on the key question that led her to pursue a PhD after having been a female leader in technology since the 1980s—among her many accomplishments\, she was the system architect and lead developer of Fedora and the founding CEO of DuraSpace. Her initial question of “where are the women and why so few” led her to research that revealed discourses and dilemmas that influenced the underrepresentation of women in computing. Payette will also discuss the prospects for change and her views on the role of not-for-profit organizations and change agents in the attempt to move toward gender parity in the design and development of the socio-technical systems we build.

SUMMARY:Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion: Who\, What\, When\, Where\, Why and How
DESCRIPTION:In the past few years\, much has been written around the need for the IT workforce to be more diverse. “Higher Education IT leaders are increasingly paying attention to diversity\, equity\, and inclusion (DEI) as critical to strategic workforce development and as a key strategic issue” (A Conversation about DEI and Top 10 Issues\, EDUCAUSE Review\, February 26\, 2018). However\, diversity\, equity\, and inclusion existed long before now and apply beyond our workforce. From how we recruit our workforce\, to working together\, our conscious and implicit biases\, our unconscious biases\, to challenging and uncomfortable conversations (language is powerful and hurtful). \nJoin us for an interactive day as we explore what we mean by diversity\, equity and inclusion\, what it means to our students\, and how we can make it more than an initiative. We’ll have a series of role playing activities (some may make you uncomfortable)\, and are meant to evoke honest discussion. We are creating a brave space – we want the conversation to continue beyond the workshop!
